Nof, Keren

Keren Nof is a Director of Process Engineering and R&D at Aqwise Wise Water Technologies Ltd, an Israeli company specializing in the design of Moving Bed Bio-film Reactors (MBBR) & Integrated Fixed-film Activated Sludge systems (IFAS). In 2015 she received her M.Sc. degree in Environmental Engineering from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. Her Thesis dealt with investigating results of Nitrogen compounds removal from River Water using MBBR in India. She joined Aqwise 12 years ago and now responsible on process and technical pre-sales engineers. In recent years she was involved in the process design of dozens of biological water and wastewater treatment plants.

Overcoming Challenges Associated with Fluctuating, High-Strength Winery Wastewater Using Biofilm Technology

Abstract

Winery wastewater is characterized by high COD content and fluctuations in flow and load. Winery bottling wastewater treatment was performed at a full-scale plant applying a two-stage Moving Bed Biological Bioreactor (MBBR) system for discharge to the public sewage system. This paper presents the challenges and results of the first two years of operation. Due to extreme deviations in the wastewater characteristics from the original design basis, several modifications were required to allow a stable effluent quality from the plant. The MBBR technology allows simple management to obtain high efficiency also during extreme fluctuations of flow rates and COD loads and to guarantee the discharge regulations.

Tavernola WWTP Retrofit Success Story: Four Times Capacity Increase by Converting Existing Structures to MBBR and Media Clarifier

Abstract

A municipal wastewater treatment plant in Italy, based on conventional activated sludge, was required to increase the treated capacity by 300%. The objective of this paper is to present the advantages and challenges in retrofit of a wastewater treatment plant. MBBR process followed by an innovative Media Clarifier was chosen as a sustainable solution, with reduced capital and operational costs, and simple maintenance works. It is concluded that this solution is easier and more economical than conventional solutions.

A municipal wastewater treatment plant in Italy, based on conventional activated sludge, was required to increase the treated capacity by 300% and improve its effluent quality. An upgrade with the MBBR process followed by an innovative Media Clarifier was chosen as the most cost-effective solution both for the upgrade itself and also OPEX. The plant was upgraded without building extra infrastructure for the biological reactor or secondary solids separation. The objective of this paper is to present the advantages upgrade design and its implementation and share the existing challenges the designers had to overcome.
