Elizabeth Sensing is a consultant with Ramboll since 2017. She has three years of experience in engineering support for industrial wastewater projects, including emissions and hydraulic modeling, laboratory testing, bench-top studies, pilot scale studies, field evaluations and site sampling, report preparation, and operations assistance and training. Elizabeth has EIT certification in Tennessee. She earned a bacherlor of science in chemical engineering from Tennessee Technological University in 2017.

Comprehensive Site-Specific Wastewater Emissions Modeling

Abstract

Biological treatment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) varies from site to site according to biomass performance. When modeling emissions from wastewater treatment plants, site-specific biodegradation data should be used when available. This approach provides the most accurate accounting of the fate of VOCs in industrial wastewater treatment plants. This paper presents Ramboll’s experience developing site-specific biodegradation rates in the petroleum refining industry. In addition to a summary of biodegradation rates, two case studies are presented to show modeling techniques and emission results. The first case study is a proposed expansion project at a petroleum refinery and the second is a simulated refinery wastewater treatment plant model using the range of biodegradation rates for benzene. The overall purpose of the paper is to show how site-specific biodegradation rates improve emissions models for petroleum refineries.
