Stensel, H David

David Stensel is Professor Emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA He received a B.S. degree in civil engineering from Union College, Schenectady, NY, and M.E. and Ph.D. degrees in environmental engineering from Cornell University. He has authored or coauthored over 150 technical publications and textbooks including the 2014 5th edition of the AECOM Metcalf & Eddy Wastewater Engineering: Treatment and Resource Recovery textbook. He has been recognized by the Water Environmenta Federation by twice receiving the Harrison Prescott Eddy Medal, the George Bradley Gascoigne Medal and the 2019 Thomas Camp Award. He is a registered professional engineer, a Diplomate in the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, a member of Washington Academy of Science and a Water Environment Federation Fellow.

Applied Fundamentals: Nitrogen and Phosphorus Process Removal Fundamentals

Abstract

Biological nutrient removal involves nitrification, denitrification and in many cases enhanced biological phosphorus removal. Each of these processes has specific fundamental mechanisms involving the type of organisms selected, the environmental conditions of pH, DO concentration, and temperature, biological kinetics, and interactions with each BNR biological process. A review of fundamental mechanisms and information from BNR studies provides a basis for understanding the effect of operating conditions and process changes on efforts to minimize effluent ammonia, nitrogen, and/or phosphorus. Each wastewater treatment facility has site specific conditions involving the wastewater characteristics, process configuration, solids handling, temperature, and tank capacity. Evaluation of key process fundamentals can lead to a BNR toolbox to use for plant evaluation to meet new effluent goals and/or optimize BNR performance. An example is given for an EBPR toolbox.
