Niclas Astrand is a Senior R&D Technology Leader at Veolia Water Technologies & Solutions working intensively with MABR (ZeeLung), ZeeDENSE (MABR + inDENSE) and MBR solutions and development. NPI (New Program Introduction) program manager for ZeeDENSE. Niclas has over 20 years of experience in WWTF design, advanced process modeling and simulation, optimization, and process control. He has management and technical experience in engineering projects with an emphasis on process design, optimization, instrumentation, control, and dynamic modeling from his years spent in academia, as a senior process engineer/manager at WWTF’s and the consulting industry. He is people-focused and mission-oriented and well-connected within the wastewater industry. His goal is great, long-lasting relationships with colleagues and clients while solving meaningful technical problems in the water resources management space.

Floc, Film & Densified Sludge: Combining MABR & Continuous Flow Densification at the Yorkville-Bristol Sanitary District

Abstract

Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) and continuous flow densification employ unique mechanisms to deliver process intensification. MABR uses a gas-transfer membrane for oxygen delivery that also serves as a biofilm support to grow a nitrogen removal biofilm that reduces the tank volume required for nitrogen removal. Continuous flow densification selects for densified biomass with improved settling characteristics to increase secondary clarifier throughput. These two intensification approaches have been successfully applied independently. This paper explores how combining the technologies delivers complementary benefits and has the potential to yield process synergies that deliver more value for utilities.
