Description: Innovative Application: Medium Pressure UV Disinfects Primary Effluent
Innovative Application: Medium Pressure UV Disinfects Primary Effluent
Abstract
Implementing medium pressure ultraviolet (UV) light for disinfection of primary effluent during wet weather conditions of a Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) presents challenges for testing, operating, and monitoring strategies. This paper discusses performance testing, monitoring, and operation of the new disinfection system at the Richmond VA, WWTP. Relevant technical information on plant operation and optimization related to this treatment process for wet weather flows is shared. The use of medium pressure ultraviolet (MP UV) light to disinfect primary effluent is a unique application of this technology given the challenges to ensure adequate performance. This paper offers insightful information relevant for wastewater treatment and water reuse applications. This project is a great example of the efforts that cities can implement to improve the bacteriological water quality of receiving waters to protect public health.
