Demonstration of ZeeNAMMOX Process to Achieve Maximized Side-stream PN/A Intensification with Low N2O Emission
Abstract
ZeeNAMMOXTM technology for side-stream nitrogen removal via Partial Nitritation and Anammox (PN/A) was validated using an industrial scale ZeeLungTM MABR cassette at WRP of PUB. It was demonstrated that ammonium oxidation rate (AOR) and total inorganic nitrogen removal rate (TINRR) are a function of oxygen transfer rate (OTR), which is controllable by the process air supply. The upper limit of the OTR was determined to be around 16 gO2 /m2 /d, which is equivalent to AOR of around 7.5 gN/m2 /d. In addition, ZeeNAMMOXTM demonstrated high energy efficiency and low N2O emission. Operation at OTR greater than 16 gO2 /m2 /d for 57 days resulted in NOB overgrowth and three strategies were examined for the NOB suppression. The results from the demo qualify ZeeNAMMOXTM technology as a favorable solution to side-stream nutrient removal and will provide the guidance to the full-scale design of ZeeNAMMOXTM.
ZeeNAMMOXTM side-stream PN/A technology was validated at WRP of PUB using an industrial scale ZeeLungTM MABR cassette. The results showed that the process performance is determined by the oxygen transfer rate up to 16 gO2/m2/d, which is equivalent to an ammonium oxidation rate of 7.5 gN/m2/d. High energy efficiency (<0.5 kWh/kgN) and low N2O emission factor (<0.75%) were also demonstrated. Additionally, NOB suppression strategies were tested when NOB overgrowth occurred with O2 oversupply.
