State of the Industry Update on the Use of Peracetic Acid for Municipal Wastewater Disinfection
Abstract
The objective of this study was to conduct a review of available literature and data sources to consolidate the most up-to-date industry information regarding the use of peracetic acid (PAA) as a disinfectant in the municipal wastewater treatment industry, and to document recent developments in instrumentation equipment used for the monitoring and control of PAA. The focus of the review was on information on the ability of PAA to achieve effluent pathogen inactivation requirements, storage and handling of PAA, current regulatory requirements for discharge of PAA residuals into the environment, different types of instruments available for PAA measurement and control, and the cost of PAA disinfection systems relative to other disinfection technologies. An analysis of case studies is also presented, with discussion of the motivation to use PAA as a disinfectant, performance of PAA as a disinfectant and instrumentation required for implementation.
