Increased Capacity and Improved Efficiency Documented From Dissolved Air Flotation Thickener (DAFT) Rehabilitation
Abstract
Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) recently completed a rehabilitation of four Dissolved Air Floatation Thickeners (DAFT). The goal of the project was to increase the capacity of the DAFT’s to thicken secondary sludge from a new 60 MGD trickling filter solids contact (TFSC) facility with the waste activated sludge (WAS) from an existing 90 MGD activated sludge plant and provide a remaining useful life of 20 years. The project met and exceeded project goals. This paper will discuss the modifications and improvements that increased capacity of an existing DAFT facility without adding additional infrastructure. In addition, the modifications improved performance with thicker solids, improved removal efficiencies, improved air saturation system, and reduced polymer use.
