Abstract
An important trend across manufacturing industries of all types is the convergence of improvements in process controls, database systems, and internet communications to provide a higher level of process optimization and analysis commonly referred to as the Internet of Things. Since wastewater treatment has traditionally been viewed as either a necessary but undesirable expense of community living or a non-productive aspect of industrial production, investments in this arena have lagged. Given the potential economic and environmental impact of improved wastewater treatment performance as well as the need to meet increasingly stringent effluent limits, investments in improved data monitoring and analysis are beginning to and will continue to grow.Entex Technologies has developed a cloud-based data analysis and monitoring system called the Process Enhancement and Analysis Knowledgebase (Entex PEAKTM) to explore how this type of system may provide value to wastewater treatment applications. This paper summarizes the improvements realized by the application of PEAK in terms of reduced chemical use and lower energy costs, implementation automatic pH control, and reduced surcharges at a fats, oil, and grease (FOG) dewatering facility using an MBBR system for effluent BOD/COD reduction.
