Beer: It is Not Just for Drinking Anymore Brewery Waste as a Supplemental Carbon Source for Biological Nutrient Removal
Abstract
Fort Collins Utilities (FCU), located in northern Colorado, is looking into its long term needs to achieve biological nutrient removal at their two facilities: the Mulberry Water Reclamation Facility (MWRF) and the Drake Water Reclamation Facility (DWRF), Process modeling has indicated that to achieve very low nitrogen and phosphorus limits, the WRFs will be carbon limited and will need to add supplemental carbon. Instead of paying for costly chemicals such as methanol, the Utility is in the process of investigating the feasibility of using alternate carbon sources. This paper describes the process and testing of the liquid waste from a local brewery for use in the biological nutrient removal process
