Pipes To Parks, Integrating Green and Blue
Abstract
This paper describes two award winning designs of urban green infrastructure solutions from site scale to street scale; solutions that integrate “green and blue” to provide water management solutions and create inviting public spaces to revitalize a community and a city. The paper shows how thoughtful and creative solutions can go beyond water and engage public and private support to provide transformative solutions that yield social, economic, and environmental benefits. The first describes an opportunistic and creative public private partnership between the City of Chattanooga and the Metropolitan Airport Authority (CMAA) that leveraged by more than 10:1 City funds that met all of the objectives of the CMAA and the water management objectives of the City. The second describes a complete street design for Cherokee Boulevard serving as a vital artery in Northwest Chattanooga and the commercial heart of the neighborhood and the backbone for economic development, connectivity, and environmental improvement – more than passage – a clean, green, and inviting place that also effectively manages rainwater.
