HIGHLY INTEGRATED DESIGN PROCESS ACHIEVES PLANT DESIGN SUCCESS FOR METRO VANCOUVER, CANADA

This paper tells the story of how an integrative design process was used to complete a Project Design Report for Metro Vancouver’s Lions Gate Treatment Plant in 15 months, reach new heights in creativity and receive unanimous Board approval to proceed to design and construction.Vancouver Metro began the design process for a new wastewater treatment plant in 2012 and needed to complete the indicative design for their Project Design Report by the end of 2013 to meet federal and provincial compliance requirements. The selected plant site, wedged between an industrial area and a growing, thriving residential community posed many challenges. To meet these challenges, Vancouver Metro chose to use an integrative design process that would bring architects, engineers, scientist and planners together in a way that would reach new heights in creative design and problem solving.In November of 2013 the indicative design received unanimous board approval, and has been designated the highest priority for Vancouver Metro’s funding plan.
