SANITARY SEWER INFILTRATION AND INFLOW CONTROL PROGRAMS – TECHNOLOGY APPLICATION TO LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES
Abstract
Sanitary sewers deteriorate with time, to the extent that their capacity decreases, eventually contaminating aquifers and surface waters due to wastewater overflows. Excessive I/I imposes an economical burden on the wastewater utility. In order to detect and control the I/I into their sanitary sewer systems, utilities have to implement a comprehensive program that normally includes three phases: investigation, evaluation and rehabilitation. Trenchless technologies are more desirable because they can be implemented with less traffic control, minimum conflict with other utilities, increased workers and community safety, and minimum dust and noise generation.The I/I control program has short term and long term components. Decision making is fundamental from the beginning. Good project management and comprehensive data management is fundamental for the successful development of the program. A MS ACCESS database can be utilized. This software has an accessible cost and its use allows for evaluation of the completed and/or ongoing repairs and creates work orders for the contractors.Utilities in Latin America are at the “doorstep” of time to implement I/I control programs. It is expected that once private utilities maximize revenues from water supply, wastewater collection, and treatment services, they will develop and implement sanitary sewer infiltration control programs. It is recommended that Latin American utilities initiate public education programs, while evaluating experiences from other countries.
