VERIFICATION OF ANIMAL WASTE TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES THROUGH THE U.S. EPA/NSF ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY VERIFICATION (ETV) SOURCE WATER PROTECTION PILOT
Abstract
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and NSF International are jointly implementing an Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Program for technologies designed to protect source waters used for drinking water. The ETV Program and Source Water Protection (SWP) Pilot will provide technology vendors a means to overcome the numerous impediments to commercialization. The Pilot is in the third of a five year project period, and has developed a number of test plans and protocols for evaluation of decentralized wastewater treatment technologies, animal waste treatment technologies and other watershed protection and infrastructure rehabilitation technologies. The Pilot has also entered into testing of several technologies, which will result in published verification statements and reports. The basic elements of the ETV Program, and verification testing activity underway in the SWP Pilot are described in this paper.
