Sanitization and Odor Controlling of Sanitary Sewerage Overflows
Abstract
The problems with sanitary sewer overflows (SSO's) have been a major concern to metropolitan sewerage agencies over the past 50 years. SSO's can have a number of adverse impacts to the environment. Obviously, the discharge of raw or untreated sewerage represents both a health hazard and public nuisance. For example, an SSO may result in street, yard, and basement flooding. In fact, this type of contamination can impact the environment as pathogens mature and eutrophication of lakes such as Lake Pontchartrain. SSO's can also impact our water supply and oyster/shellfish beds. As a result, The New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board has to have contingency plans to reduce this major impact where SSO's are common nature.
