CHANGING ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF LABORATORY PERSONNEL
Abstract
New environmental regulations, technological advancements, customer demands and competition are the key factors affecting changes in environmental laboratories. In order to accommodate the increased complexity of operations and maintain efficiency and competitiveness, the utility labs must rely on a functional administrative structure and knowledgeable, well-trained, involved and empowered personnel. Implementation of changes and defining a new structure leading to a streamlined and efficient operation is an involved and difficult process. Many technical obstacles and reservations due to human nature have to be overcome. The result however provides significant long-term benefits for the organization and for the employees. The new system strengthens the laboratory's position in the competitive environment and allows for personal growth and advancement of its employees.
