CANADA-CHINA PARTNERSHIP CONSTRUCTS AN SBR SYSTEM FOR A RECYCLE PAPER MILL IN SHANGHAI
Abstract
The Shanghai Xinlun Paper Co. Ltd., located in the Xinghuo Development Zone, Pudong New Area, China, required secondary treatment to meet the regulated effluent requirements for its recycle paper and deinking mill. The mill also needed the treatment plant to be installed and operating when the new paper machine was brought on line in August 2000. This paper provides a brief description of the mill, details on the design and construction of the wastewater treatment plant, and operating data during the first six months of operation. The design wastewater characteristics are a flow of 15,000 m3/d, a COD of 800 mg/l, and a BOD of 400 mg/l. The mill had to meet a stringent effluent COD limit of 100 mg/l (other effluent limits are 30 mg/l BOD and 200 mg/l TSS).The treatment plant was designed and constructed on a fast-track basis in the Year 2000. A contract was signed with ADI Systems Inc. late in January 2000; process design was completed by the end of February, and construction started in May with substantial completion by August. The system was started up in September. The complete treatment system includes coarse and fine screening, primary clarifiers, an equalization basin, a nutrient addition system, an ADI-SBR (sequencing batch reactor) system, and a combined primary/secondary sludge dewatering facility.
