SURVEY OF MEMBRANE PLANTS AND DISPOSAL OF MEMBRANE SIDE STREAMS
Abstract
A survey of membrane systems operating at water treatment plants (WTPs) and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) was conducted as part of an ongoing Bureau of Reclamation project. Between an earlier 1992 survey (Mickley et al. 1993) and the present one over 230 membrane plants have been surveyed. The surveys provide a picture of the growing membrane industry within the utility sector. A comparison of the 1992 and 1999 surveys shows major changes in the numbers, types, purposes, and sizes of the membrane plants being built. As part of the survey, disposal methods for membrane sidestreams have been determined and trends in disposal practices have been identified.
