AIR IONIZATION FOR ODOR CONTROL – OPERATION INSTALLATIONS
Abstract
Trans-Tech is a supplier of Bentax™ Odor Control Systems for up to 100 percent odor control in wastewater treatment plants. This is Swiss technology that has been used successfully in Europe for twenty years. Air passing over ion tubes produces positively and negatively charged oxygen molecules, or ions, but no ozone. The ionizers are designed to be portable, complete with fan, or installed in-duct, to treat the fresh air make-up side of any enclosed area's ventilation system. Odors inside the building, tank, or other enclosure are oxidized and eliminated. Each ionizing modular unit consumes only 50 watts of power. Each model 50F5 ionizer is 25 × 8.8 × 8.4 inches, and weighs 16 pounds. Two of these modular units can typically treat a twenty five-foot diameter sludge storage tank. A large belt filter press room, housing several presses may require a dozen or more of these modular units. At Lexington Town Branch WWTP, eighteen of these modules replaced a 17,000 CFM wet scrubber. The modular units are installed on the fresh air make-up side of the system's ventilation ducting, and can be flange mounted to the ducts, or rack mounted in an air plenum as part of the air handling system.By oxidizing odor at the source, the precursors to acid gas; hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and other organic gases are eliminated, creating air quality that provides a safe and healthy work environment. This ionized air environment also retards corrosion of electronics and infrastructure. By eliminating odor in the enclosure, clean and odor free air can then be exhausted to the local neighborhood.A minimal footprint is required. The system uses no water, negligible added power requirements, and no chemicals. Capital and O&M costs are significantly less than any comparably sized “end of pipe” system; such as chemical scrubbers, bio-filters, or carbon.Operating installations in the United States include lift stations, belt filter press rooms, sludge holding tanks, and laboratories. All U.S. installations report excellent odor reduction, and minimal operation and maintenance cost. An overview of some of these successful operating installations in the United States is provided.
