BIOLOGICAL AND ADVANCED OXIDATION TREATMENT OF LANDFILL LEACHATE FROM HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL SITE
Abstract
Landfill leachate water from hazardous waste site have been treated sequentially in a laboratory scale static bed bioreactor (SBB) and in a bubble column by ozone/hydrogen peroxide advanced oxidation technology. The water was highly saline and was contaminated with high level of organic and inorganic pollutants. The major contaminants were ferricyanide, phenols, PCBs, heavy metals, high background COD (14,000 mg/L to 24,000 mg/L), etc. The background COD and most of the phenols were oxidized and removed by biological oxidation process, ferricyanide was removed by complexation, and O3/H2O2 was used for the oxidation of the remaining phenols and polishing and oxidation of cyanide.
