INTEGRATION OF GIS AND CMMS AT THE ONONDAGA COUNTY, NY DEPARTMENT OF WATER ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION
Abstract
The Onondaga County Department of Water Environment Protection has implemented a new information management system that includes on-line O&M manuals, a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), and a departmental intranet. The new system was placed on line throughout 2002, and 2003 will be the first full year of operation. The focus of this paper is integration of the County's Geographic Information System (GIS) with the new CMMS. While the CMMS alone is a powerful tool for improving maintenance management in an organization, the GIS interface provides additional opportunities for improved performance. Benefits of the GIS/CMMS interface for collection system maintenance include easily finding maintenance information, ease of planning and scheduling maintenance work, and ease of summarizing and analyzing maintenance data.
