ARE FLOATING WEIRS APPROPRIATE FOR FROTH CONTROL?
Abstract
Froth control can be conducted by various methods of surface wasting, including a fixed weir, automatic weir, and combination of both. The advantages of floating weir surface wasting include minimized operational maintenance, minimized instrumentation, and continuous operation. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of floating weirs as a means of froth control, a pilot test was conducted at the Tallman Island Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP). The Tallman Island WWTP is currently undergoing a major upgrade that includes step feed BNR modifications, which is a known cause of foaming in the aeration tanks. The 30 day pilot test demonstrated that the floating weir design was an effective method of froth control.
