Well-proven solutions for problems with bad odour emission from Vienna's sewer system

Adopting the following systematic approach, the Vienna City Administration has successfully solved odour problems in the entire Vienna city area:Central registration of all complaintsIdentification of problem spots by registering the location and frequency of complaintsCategorising problem spots, establishing the causes and elaborating individually tailored solutionsSolutions were developed for each problem category. The solutions found were tested and evaluated before they were finally adopted. This evaluation process formed the basis for the implementation of concrete measures and for further, more specific tests and evaluations.The following measures have been successfully implemented up to now:Dosage of calcium nitrate by means of a fully-automatic dosage facility along a main collector of 12 km length.Dosage of ferrous and calcium nitrate in a pressure line.Local measures (e.g. deodorising).Numerous further methods were tested for the following applications:Pre-treatment of cesspool content discharged into the systemThe use of ferrous hydroxide sludge accruing in water treatment processesThe efficiency of systematic sewer scouringSome local problem solutionsIndividually tailored solutions were elaborated for each problem category, thus ensuring that prompt and efficient action can be taken whenever the need arises.
