Regulations and Real Life: How Epa's UV Disinfection Guidance Manual Recommendations and Requirements Compare with Operating UV Facilities

In July 2003, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) released a draft of the UV Disinfection Guidance Manual (UVDGM). The objective of the UVDGM is to provide water utilities, consultants, manufacturers, and state agencies technical information and guidance on the selection, design, and operation of UV installations and to describe the UV disinfection-related requirements for compliance with the LT2ESWTR. The UVDGM was developed based on the current state of UV equipment and existing information on the design, validation, and operation of UV facilities. However, experience on these items is continuously growing through research and operating experience at UV facilities in the US.This paper will present a brief summary of UVDGM O&M requirements and recommendations and will compare current facilities UV intensity sensor calibration observations with the draft UVDGM recommendations and requirements.
