The Role of Ozone in Achieving the Delicate Balance Between Pathogen Reduction and By-Product Control
Abstract
Water utilities are faced with the often competing goals of Pathogen Reduction and By-Product Control. Creating a balance between these goals is difficult. This paper summarizes the recent efforts of the International Ozone Association to better define how ozonation can be used to achieve this balance. The paper will present how the International Ozone Association (IOA) has assisted the USEPA during regulations and guidance manual preparation, recent research results and full-scale experience.The paper will be of benefit to the Specialty Conference attendees as it will present how the key regulatory concerns have been addressed, present recent research on bromate, and present successful operations experience on balancing the conflicting goals of pathogen reduction and by-product control.
