SURVEY AND DATABASE ESTABLISHMEMT OF VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS FROM INDUSTRIAL PARK WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS IN TAIWAN
Abstract
Due to ozone instead of suspended particulates become the major pollutant responsible for Pollutant Standard Index (PSI) above “moderate” category, and the increasing concentration of ground-level ozone in recent years, Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) is putting an effort to cut the emission of ozone precursors— volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). With treating a large amount of industrial wastewater, industrial park wastewater treatment plants (IPWTPs) were considered as major VOCs emission sources. In 2004, Taiwan's EPA granted a project to survey six IPWTPs including one petrochemical, two science, three conventional IPWTPs for establishing a database of VOCs characteristics in industrial wastewater of IPWTP. The results show that more VOCs species and higher VOCs concentration in inlet wastewater of conventional IPWTPs than petrochemical and science IPWTPs. It is corresponded with most factories located at conventional industrial park do not pre-treat industrial wastewater before discharging them to IPWTPs. Now, Taiwan EPA is going to enact VOCs emission standard for IPWTPs.
