Abstract
Publicly owned treatment works (POTWs) across the United States have realized a major reduction in the heavy metals in their influent and effluent, along with a substantial improvement in the quality of their biosolids, due to the development and promulgation, by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), of the following regulations:General Pretreatment Regulations for Existing and New Sources of Pollution (40 CFR Part 403), andStandards for the Use or Disposal of Biosolids (40 CFR Part 503).While professionals in our industry are well versed in the positive impact that these regulations have had on human health and the environment, efforts to document and report these impacts to the general public have been minimal.
