REDUCING ODORS FROM BIOSOLIDS WITH THE HELP OF A NITRATE SALT
Abstract
Odor prevention with the help of a nitrate salt solution and the subsequent stimulation of nitrate reducing bacteria (NRB) is a well proven concept in sewerage collection systems and other types of waste water applications (Bentzen et al 1995. Abdul-Talib et al 2002a,b). Treatment of biosolids with nitrate salts has been done to a far lesser extent and practical experience has been limited (Abu-Orf et al 2002, AbuOrf and Morano 2003). Dewatered biosolids produced from treatment plants are quite often also a source for hydrogen sulphide (H2S), reduced sulfur compounds (RSC), as well as other odorants. This paper reports on results from pilot scale testing at the La Crau treatment plant in the south of France conducted in September 2003.
