IMPROVING ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL EFFICIENCY AT WASTEWATER TREATMENT FACILITIES
Abstract
The protection of the environment has always been the paramount concern of wastewater treatment professionals. The purpose behind wastewater treatment is to ensure the sustainability of our natural environment, while improving the quality of life for the residents which are served by these facilities. In recent years, there has been an increased emphasis on reducing our carbon and environmental footprint in both in Canada and internationally. This paper discusses the opportunities that are available to the wastewater treatment industry to reduce our energy and environmental footprint even further through the design, construction and operation. Alternative energy sources and good design practices which are available to reduce energy usage at wastewater treatment plants are discussed. In addition, the LEED program and some of the major elements which could be applicable to wastewater treatment facilities are also discussed.
