The Indianapolis Rain Garden Project: An American Society of Civil Engineers Community Service Project
Abstract
The Indianapolis Rain Garden Project is currently under development. A 20,000 grant from United Water has been awarded and the first rain garden has been constructed. With this funding, the local Indiana Metro Branch chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) plans to construct up to six school rain gardens. The rain garden project has several aspects that will make it a positive force for the community, including educational opportunities, beautification, improved environmental quality, and neighborhood and infrastructure benefits. It is the hope of the ASCE that the program will be a springboard to inspire local residents to develop their own such projects. This presentation will focus on the project's development, including the formation of a steering committee, application and screening process for school selection, and project implementation.
