Active Bacterial Diversity as Biomarker for Activated Sludge Inhibition by Chromium
Abstract
Toxic chemicals such as hexavalent chromium entering wastewater treatment systems cause a significant concern for treatment performance due to the inhibition of heavy metals on biomass growth. The objective of this study was to use bacterial diversity as a biomarker for measuring system health under the impact of Cr (VI) inhibition. The results from laboratory scale reactor, the Sycamore Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and the Mill Creek WWTP demonstrate that the bacterial diversity is largely reduced as Cr (VI) concentration increases. The results suggeste that the bacterial diversity can be used as a biomarker for system health.
