Advancing Nutrient Recovery through Urine-Derived Fertilizers (UDF) in the U.S.
Abstract
The National Science Foundation-funded Innovation at the Nexus of Food-Energy-Water grant centered on urine separation and reprocessing to fertilizer is the largest full-cycle program in the United States. It came about as an outcome of a Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF)-funded partnership between a non-profit, a utility, the private sector, and universities. This paper provides an overview of preliminary findings from the WERF study which was recently published in a report and will not be repeated here, outlines the goals of the current NSF-funded study, reviews the next-generation technologies being used and deployed currently for a 2018 crop season study, and will provide an update from our attitudinal assessments around urine-derived fertilizers (UDF) and UDF-treated products.
