Chemical Phosphorus Removal: All You Need to Know about Which One to Choose and Where and How Much to Add?

Abstract

With increasingly stringent effluent phosphorus requirements, the use of chemical phosphorus removal has increased. Chemical phosphorus removal in wastewater treatment has been used both as an independent/conventional process instead of biological phosphorus removal system and is nearly always included in tertiary effluent polishing to meet more stringent regulations. This interactive session at WEFTEC 2023 includes various chemicals typically used in wastewater treatment for phosphorus removal, mechanisms in chemical phosphorus removal, specifically for aluminum-based and iron-based chemical salts, dosage and mixing requirements for optimum phosphorus removal, and solids production due to chemical addition for phosphorus removal. In an interactive section, the attendees will calculate chemical dose requirements for aluminum-based and iron-based chemicals to achieve various levels of effluent phosphorus concentrations, e.g. 1 mg P/L or 0.1 mg P/L, identify the impacts of mixing on dose requirements, and estimate the sludge production. A fact sheet is scheduled for publication by the Water Environment Federation (WEF) in 2023. This interactive session is based on the work of the Chemical Phosphorus Removal, a subgroup for Phosphorus Removal Design Group, a subcommittee formed under Municipal Resource Recovery Design Committee (MRRDC) of Water Environment Federation (WEF). The goal of the Chemical Phosphorus Removal subgroup is to summarize the current knowledge in the fundamentals and provide design criteria for chemical phosphorus removal processes.

Abstract

For the first time, mainstream anammox was successfully and consistently achieved in a full-scale WRRF. This was demonstrated by over a year of operating data in a deep-bed filter at the HRSD York River Treatment Plant. This paper will present the experiences and lessons learned from operating a full-scale PDNA filter at the HRSD York River Treatment Plant, important results from PDNA MBBR pilot testing, and design concepts for the installation of a full-scale PDNA MBBR.

Optimization Strategies: BOD to N-removal - OCSD Case Study

Abstract

The Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) modified their activated sludge operation from biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) to nitrification-denitrification (NDN) mode to reduce ammonia discharged and sent to the Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS) operated by Orange County Water District. Aggressive design criteria could be used since there are no regulatory requirement to meet effluent standards while maintaining stable performance. The conversion to NDN was successfully implemented at modest cost and modifications to existing facilities, without adding new aeration basin volume. Aeration basins were reconfigured to achieve stable nitrification and denitrification. Two new clarifiers increased the total number of available clarifiers to 26. Complete nitrification is achieved and settleability improved dramatically. An economic comparison showed that the combined energy (blower plus pumping) and thickening chemical costs for BOD and NDN modes are the same.

Overview: Introduction and WRF Project Overview

Abstract

Many Water Resources Recovery Facilities (WRRF) are facing demands to reduce the nutrient load discharged into the environment. While effluent discharge permits are still evolving there, some watersheds face requirements in the form of nutrient load caps, a percentage nutrient reduction, and, for some WRRFs that already remove nutrients, a prospect of lower limits. This goal of this project is to produce optimization guidelines to improve WRRF nutrient removal performance while ensuring the stability of nutrient removal processes. This guidance is particularly important for facilities that are looking to achieve increased nutrient removal from existing WRRFs or those striving meet very low effluent nutrient concentrations. Facilities that seek to implement advanced approaches and technologies such as short-cut nitrogen removal, sidestream treatment, carbon redirection (which can impact carbon to nitrogen and carbon to phosphorus ratios, as well as energy recovery), advanced solids fermentation, and certain treatment processes for resource recovery purposes also benefit from this guidance. The goal of WRF project 4973 is to provide guidance for optimizing WRRF operation while reducing nutrient discharge into the environment. A series of WRF sponsored webinars on selected topics is planned for 2020/2021 on optimization for nutrient removal
