Prediction of Biogas Production Dynamics from a Multi-feed Anaerobic Co-digestion Facility

Abstract

Co-digestion introduces greater complexity and risks to water resource recovery facility design and operation, especially if the WRRF is managing discrete trucked in deliveries of different high strength wastes. Here, we present a set of mechanistic modeling techniques to predict biogas production dynamics from a large North American co-digestion facility. One of the largest contributors of uncertainty to biogas production dynamics is the total and organic solids content of high strength wastes such as fats, oils, and grease. The calibration of the model reported in this manuscript allowed for accurate prediction of total biogas production dynamics and the simulation of load equalization strategies to minimize fluctuations in biogas production rate.
