Sean Scuras began working in the wastewater treatment field in 1982. He started his career as an Operations Specialist at a large WWTP in Denver, got his MS in Civil Engineering at University of Colorado Denver and his PhD at Clemson University sepcializing in biological porcess engineering. Dr. Scuras has experience with biological process design, modeling, troubleshooting, and operator training. He is currently Garver's National Practice Leader for Wastewater Treatment and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Clemson University.

Granulation as the Salvation? Demonstration-scale Testing to Reduce the Cost of IPR

Abstract

The NUA and Garver completed a comprehensive evaluation that assessed various alternatives including Lake augmentation from out-of-basin surface water supplies, groundwater wellfield expansion, stormwater diversion, and others. Ultimately, the evaluation pointed to water reuse as the most feasible solution for the City’s long-term water supply needs. The City then developed a phased plan for the study, piloting, and eventual permitting of a new potable reuse program. The eventual potable reuse program would be constructed to augment the Lake. Multiple trains of enhanced biological nutrient removal (BNR) were operated continuously from June of 2021 to June of 2022. Both the modified University of Cape Town and Aerobic Granular Sludge approaches were tested for capabilities to achieve low total-P and total-N effluents which could meet stringent requirements for IPR in OK.

The Norman Utility Authority (OK), with financial support from the USBR's Title XVI Water Reuse Research Program completed a demonstration and pilot testing program in June of 2022. Design and construction of testing facilities was initiated in the spring of 2021, with support from Garver (design) and Walters-Morgan (construction). The testing facilities included a demonstration-scale batch reactor for aerobic granular sludge treatment of up to 300,000 gpd of raw wastewater influent (screened).

Abstract

The LOTT Clean Water Alliance completed the first phase (two of five trains) of an upgrade to the secondary process at its Budd Inlet Treatment Plant in 2022 to improve the efficiency of nitrogen removal. The entire project was completed in early 2023. The upgrade included improvements to nitrified recycle pumping, added two swing zones to each train, added large bubble mixing in the dedicated anoxic zones as well as the swing zones, replaced two single stage centrifugal blowers with turbo blowers (to compliment the one turbo blower in use for over 10 years), and added ammonia-based aeration control (ABAC). After one year of operation, the effluent TIN of < 0.5 mg/L was substantially lower than the 3 mg/L seasonal TIN limit while also decreasing energy and methanol usage
