Mr. Daukss serves as Discipline Leader and Senior Project Manager with Tetra Tech in Michigan. He has responsibility for technical project delivery, quality and standards for wastewater treatment and biosolids management projects. He has over 40 years experience in all aspects of proejct delivery for completion of complex water resource recovery facility design and improvement projects. Mr. Daukss has been involved with biosoldis management strategies for municipalites for his entire career. He has participated in the evolution of management practices from the most basic solids handling and disposal practice to bioenergy production strategies for more sustainable operations.

Renewable Natural Gas from Anaerobic Digestion with Combined Heat and Power Recovery Transforms Biosolids Management at the City of Grand Rapids, Michigan Water Resource Recovery Facility

Abstract

The City of Grand Rapids Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) had only one option for biosolids management that relied on landfill disposal of un-stabilized wastewater residuals. A long-term strategy was developed that implemented an anaerobic digestion approach consistent with sustainability and environmental stewardship goals. A project was commissioned in 2018 to design and construct a Biodigestion with Combined Heat and Power Recovery facility with a Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Conditioning system. The biogas from the process is refined with a renewable natural gas conditioning system and subsequently sold to the utility company. The combined heat and power system produces heat for the digestion process and provides electricity that is utilized within the plant to offset the power needs of the WRRF operation. The facilities have been constructed and operational for nearly 12 months and this is the first WRRF in Michigan to convert biogas to utility grade RNG.

The City of Grand Rapids (City), Michigan has implemented a strategy to manage wastewater loadings consistent with the City's policy for sustainability and environmental stewardship. The City has completed the construction of an anaerobic digestion process for management of wastewater residuals that includes biogas recovery as a renewable natural gas product (RNG). The RNG product qualifies for a Renewable Index Number (RIN) with the USEPA for trade as a D3 RIN biofuel.
