A Utility's Journey to Evaluate Alternatives and Craft a Collection System Odor and Corrosion Control Strategy
Abstract
This manuscript shares the unique journey undertaken by the Manasquan River Regional Sewerage Authority to understand and remediate the odor and corrosion issues in their collection system and the systematic steps taken to evaluate, select, design, and implement a holistic solution. Air and wastewater hydrogen sulfide data was collected and a triple bottom line evaluation was performed to recommend improvements for odor and corrosion control. The collection system was evaluated during a three-month chemical trial that showed that the system can be treated effectively using calcium nitrate and hydrogen peroxide to reduce hydrogen sulfide and dissolved sulfide concentrations. As of July 2021, design is in progress. Calcium nitrate systems will be implemented at two meter chambers. A new carbon column system and a high plume up-blast exhaust fan will be implemented at Upper Manasquan Pump Station and Lower Manasquan Pump Station, respectively.
