Simplot Expands Wastewater Treatment Plant and Achieves Direct Discharge Compliance With Membrane Bioreactor System
Abstract
The J.R. Simplot Company (Simplot) has completed an expansion of the wastewater treatment plant at their Portage la Prairie, Manitoba processing facility. This paper reviews the overall system and highlights the treatment performance of the biological wastewater treatment plant. Prior to the upgrade, wastewater treatment at Simplot consisted of a pre-treatment system followed by a low-rate anaerobic ADI-BVF® reactor and a sulfide oxidation tank, and the final effluent was discharged to the local POTW. Simplot elected to upgrade the plant’s wastewater treatment system to include a membrane bioreactor (MBR) system complete with biological and chemical nutrient removal to generate high quality effluent for direct discharge to the Assiniboine River.
