Description: Successful controlled microbiome-shift into densified biomass in continuous flow...
Successful controlled microbiome-shift into densified biomass in continuous flow bioreactors for biological nutrient removal
Abstract
Presentation of results of our latest developments at SUEZ, now in a go-to-market uptake phase. Densified biomass obtained through controlled microbiome-shift has demonstrated strong, compact & resilient behavior compared to Conventional Activated Sludge (CAS). Full description is shared on how the change of microbiome from fluffy flocculated biomass to dense aggregates has been achieved in a well-described transitioning phase. This unique controlled microbiome-shift into densified biomass paves the way to revise new guidelines and to challenge the status-quo of CAS in terms of design and operation.
This paper reports a full-scale experiment of activated sludge densification by hydrocyclone where the conventional activated sludge was successfully turned into a purposely controlled partial granulation process. The paper proposes a definition of densified sludge together with new possible design engineering guidelines, beyond conventional activated sludge admitted practices, which are now possible with the densified sludge. The later having extremely stable and enhanced settling property. It also explores the concept of biological architecture, where function and form are causally linked through novel approaches of process engineering.
