Integrating Climate Change into the Implementation of Hazard Mitigation Measures for Water and Wastewater Infrastructure
Abstract
After the Presidential Disaster Declaration for Hurricane Sandy in 2012, ARCADIS assisted the Nassau County (New York) Department of Public Works with a large-scale mitigation project to harden and protect the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant (Bay Park STP) against future flood events. The methodology utilized by the project team and the coordination efforts with key stakeholders to successfully obtain funding for the identified mitigation measures focused not only on mitigating the direct impacts of Hurricane Sandy, but also on integrating impacts that could affect the facility in the foreseeable future. In particular, the methodology focused on the successful integration of climate change and sea level rise into the project scope of work and the subsequent 406/428 Hazard Mitigation Proposal.
