Construction and Public Relations of the Temporary Toilet System Directly Connected to Sewers in Yokohama City
Abstract
In Japan, major earthquakes have occurred frequently. Damage to sewage system facilities in affected areas has had great influences on the civic life, by making it impossible to use toilets. To assure toilet functions in locations such as local disaster prevention bases, Yokohama is installing temporary toilet systems that are directly connected to sewers while taking other measures to heighten the seismic resistance of flow-end branch sewers, trunk sewers, and wastewater treatment plants. The city is engaging in various public relations (PR) activities in order to inform citizens as to the mode of use and installation situation. These approaches are linked to smoother operation of the toilet systems by the citizens in emergencies and to increased awareness of disaster prevention.By these approaches, the city is making toilet systems available for use with peace of mind at local disaster prevention bases and other sites in times of disaster.
