A focused Sanitary Sewer Survey provides actionable results for a successful sewer rehabilitation project
Abstract
The pressures of economic stress and aging sewers require that any sewer system infrastructure analysis use a proactive and intelligent approach. To best meet their goals of accuracy and cost-effectiveness, the City of Logan’s SSES program used regional flow monitoring followed by micromonitoring. Micromonitoring is a proven technology that can be easily and rapidly deployed and redeployed within the same system. Its primary advantage over traditional methods is the effective quantification of flows and detection of I&I in upstream (i.e., smaller diameter) reaches of the system where regional flow monitoring equipment doesn’t always provide reliable results. This paper describes the focused SSES approach used by the City and cost savings it achieved. It also highlights a case study where pre- and post-monitoring shows the effectiveness of the approach and completed sewer rehabilitation project. Finally, the paper provides an overview of the capital improvement recommendations for future phases of the program.
