Application of UV Disinfection at a High Purity Oxygen Activated Sludge Facility
Abstract
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) established disinfection requirements for wastewater facilities that discharge to receiving waters in the State of Kansas. The current draft permit for the Unified Government of Wyandotte County mandates the disinfection of treated effluent from the Kaw Point Wastewater Treatment Plant (KPWWTP) by December 31, 2013. The KPWWTP is a pure oxygen activated sludge facility that treats a large portion (over 50 percent) of industrial wastewater. As such, the influent wastewater is subject to influxes of various contaminants on an irregular basis. Studies were conducted to verify the best disinfection approach that could be implemented at the plant. Ozone, chlorine, and UV were all evaluated for implementation at the KPWWTP. UV was ultimately selected and testing to verify impacts from industrial users.
