Tulsa's Storage Solution to SSO Reduction
Abstract
The City of Tulsa, Oklahoma is ranked the 46th largest city in the United States based on the United States Census Bureau. The Tulsa Metropolitan Utility Authority (TMUA) serves this large metropolitan population with four major treatment plants: Northside, Southside, Haikey Creek and Lower Bird Creek. TMUA owns, operates, and maintains approximately 3,154 kilometers (1,960 miles) of sewers, 62 lift stations, and four wastewater treatment plants that can treat 4.51 cubic meter per second (103 mgd). TMUA continuously works to size and operate their treatment plants efficiently to handle peak conditions. Common in this part of the country are high intensity rain events that lead to rapid spikes in wastewater flows that can overwhelm any system. TMUA has employed flow equalization basins (FEBs) throughout their system as an economical option to address these short duration but high intensity instances,
