Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emission and Conservation of Nitrogen and Phosphorus During Swine Manure Composting
Abstract
Reduction of greenhouse gas(N2O and CH4) emissions and conservation of nitrogen and phosphorus were tested in a pilot-scale swine manure composting with the addition of modified red-mud(MR). Compared with the control pile, the pile with modified red-mud addition had 17.24% reduction on N lost as N2O, and 38.28% reduction on C emission as CH4. Moreover, the content of soluble orthophosphate in the pile with the modified red-mud addition was lower than that of the control, which is helpful to reduce P loss caused by the runoff during land application of swine manure compost. These results clearly showed that the addition of the modified red-mud can simultaneously reduce greenhouse gas emission and conserve nutrients during swine manure composting.
