The Effect of Upstream Processes on UV Disinfection and Chlorination in the Greater Cincinnati Sewer District
Abstract
The Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSDGC) is responsible for conveying and treating an average of 192 million gallons per day (MGD) of wastewater and it operates seven major treatment plants in Hamilton County. Several of wastewater treatment processes including biological nutrient removal plants as well as wet weather facilities all utilize disinfection process for quality water discharge. This paper presents the various impacts of upstream process on the disinfection processes at nutrient removal wastewater treatment plants, and finally a drinking water treatment plant. It also presents several case studies showing how cutting edge technology could enhance the disinfection efficacy. Finally it presents from utility perspective on how to design and operates the disinfection process in different conditions including wet weather facilities.
