Virginia Beach Sewer Operations Performance Measures
Abstract
Performance measures provide challenging and achievable goals for utility operators. The major goal of all operators is to ensure the sewer is transported from the customer to the treatment plant without any overflows and that all customers have service. Those goals can be achieved with minimal effort depending on system age, design, topography, weather, and preventive maintenance. The one factor that the utility operator controls is preventive maintenance. The easiest way to encourage operators to perform preventive maintenance is to set a goal that is achievable and will provide positive system performance. Over time operators will see the benefits from the preventive maintenance and it will become part of the culture. Setting goals and measuring performance is a key tool in operations and maintenance preventive maintenance programs. Integrating asset management into work order systems gives operators, Information Technology personnel, and planners a voice in operations and maintenance.
