Bordered on three sides with white sandy beaches and saltwater, beautiful coastal Clearwater, Florida has been challenged since the early 1900s to maintain its drinking water supply to meet growing permanent residents, businesses and tourism demands. Clearwater’s sustainability plan addresses water supply and is both fiscally proactive and ecologically responsible. The plan has been promoted to the community as “The Future of Our Water”. Clearwater’s Public Utilities Department is responsible for water management from drinking water production, treatment and distribution, to wastewater collections, through wastewater treatment, to reclaimed water distribution or effluent discharge. Clearwater leverages each facet of the water cycle of life using a holistic approach: every step builds upon and strengthens the other.
