Recognizing the Professionalism of the Industry’s Workforce
Abstract
The operation of public drinking water and wastewater systems is dependent upon the competence of highly trained water and wastewater operators. Without the knowledge and experience of these individuals, water quality and availability are at risk. Despite the critical nature of their work, operators are often viewed as tradesmen rather than professionals. This perception could have negative consequences as current operators continue to age and qualified young people opt out of a profession that does not bring its practitioners the prestige they deserve. For these reasons, it is essential to promote the professionalism of the industry’s workforce and its criticality to the safety of our public health and the environment. A survey of other professions suggests that an industry-recognized, standardized certification program could provide a mechanism to promote water environment operators and initiate industry professionalization. Recognizing this need, ABC’s Certification Commission for Environmental Professionals (C2EP) has developed such a program.
