Description: Implementing an Effective Remote Manhole Level Monitoring Network
Implementing an Effective Remote Manhole Level Monitoring Network
Abstract
Central Contra Costa Sanitary District (District) undertook a remote manhole level monitoring network pilot project, with the aim of creating a large scale monitoring system that would complement CCCSD's existing best management practices to reduce collection system overflows. An important consideration for the project was the selection of a device that would best serve the needs of the Collection System Operations Department, (CSOD). A collaborative approach was used to promote the involvement of all stakeholders, which included Operations staff, Engineering and Purchasing Departments. Field trials of available technology enabledinformed decision making; and the involvement of Operations staff throughout the project contributed to the successful implementation of a remote manhole monitoring network for the District. This paper presents the project with a broad perspective to provide agencies with an understanding of why the project was initiated, the fundamentals of the technology, challenges and important lessons the District learnt along the way.
